Fresh back from my San Francisco adventure. So much talent out there. Advancing, Advancing. I miss it so much already.

I found this video off of a blog by rob nasty

“Rob Nasty is a Champion Uprocker and established B-Boy from the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 20 years.” (quoted off the blog, word.)

Check it out, he’s currently writing a submission for a book about the Filipino Hip Hop experience.

It’s mad inspiring, my favorite shot is the huge handwritten timeline pulled across the wall.

This is interesting, I only see one woman in the video. I’m not quick to call this out as exclusive or exclusionary. We all know that hip hop is male dominated. Right now, I’m more interested in how hip hop is used to assert Asian male masculinity, power, and representation in a larger arts movement in America specifically and globally.

Taking notice of a strong presence of Asian males in hip hop dance, and projects like this that trace the historical roots, I wonder how Asian male sexuality in America has changed since hip hop began.

I should holler at Jeff Chang, i mean, he’s gotta know

I am really excited about the conversations this is generating.

keep up the re-blogs! express yourself, whether you agree or disagree with me.

Can you read it? “White girls..hard habit to break”

Seriously. So this shirt, and countless other disgraceful bro-targeted screenprints are produced by a brand called ‘Tits.’ I love actual tits, so I’m extra upset that they turned such lovely anatomy it into a wack ‘streetwear’ label.

Let me get real here tho, why is this particularly trippin me up? well, cuz the dude is totally Asian, and may I use my mixed folks radar here too? Yup, they wanna use the Hapa good looks to sell white beauty.

The charge beneath this is deep chil’ren. If I saw some Hapa, Asian, POC whatever wearing this I’d be like….listen, you better love yourself. White-washed self hatred sure is a hard (habit?) pattern to break.

I mean really? Would the have used a WHITE male model to sell this? What are they selling? I would have liked to sit in on that board meeting.

someone’s response: i think this shirt is pretty funny, and i would totally wear it. The thing is that i don’t have 18 dicks jammed up my ass, making me so pissed off about really minuscule hints of racial anything. this isn’t even fucking offensive dude, it’s just saying someone likes white girls. relax.

Another’s response the above response :I really don’t have the spoons to enter into this kind of debate right now. But I strongly feel that I should at least attempt a response to this, and maybe some of my followers will chime in more adequately. I’m not even going to address what an all around shitty and violent phrase “eighteen dicks jammed up my ass” is, but I’m assuming you mean “Stop being so uptight.” And to that I will say, fuck no. I will not.

I will not stop being aware of what’s going on. I will not “relax” how you’d like me to. I will not apologize for actually thinking about this crap and recognizing just how crappy it is. I will not stop thinking critically about institutionalized racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism or any oppression, and I will not stop challenging it when I find it internalized in myself, expressed by others or perpetuated in the world around me. And I’m not sorry about it, not even slightly.

If you can’t handle that, I suggest you unfollow me.

But hey, if my reblogging of things like this makes you uncomfortable, then you know what? Maybe it’s a good thing I’m reblogging them. Maybe it’s a good thing you’ve followed me in the first place and seen them up until this point. I’m glad that at the very least, you were forced to think about something for a second, something difficult but important. Because it’s not comfortable to engage in dialogue about this sort of stuff. It’s not. I know it’s not, believe me, but it’s necessary for progression. Societal problems can’t get any better if we all pretend they don’t exist. Really, short of very willful and purposeful avoidance, some of us don’t have the option of pretending because we’re noticeably affected by this kind of crap on a regular basis.

That said: the thing about “really minuscule hints of racial anything” is that they’re indicative of a larger society in which racism is absolutely still present, albeit more subtly, not to mention how they can be extremely hurtful in and of themselves on an individual level. I don’t think this shirt is ~pretty funny~ because general “whiteness” is still considered the ideal by oppressive standards of beauty that function under racism and sexism. And this is capitalized on. It’s capitalized on pretty blatantly, regardless of how obviously fucked up it is. For example, please take a moment to consider skin lightening creams and all the products promising to ~treat~ or ~improve~ “ethnic” hair. They don’t exist out of nowhere.

I think it makes sense that the OP was “really pissed off” here because, uh, it’s frustrating when white bodies are systematically imposed upon everyone as the most valuable inherently (white bodies of a certain shape and size, of course, with no visible disabilities). “Just saying that someone likes white girls” wouldn’t be a big deal if a) women weren’t still valued on their looks first and foremost, on their heteronormative ability to be ~*attractive*~ or aesthetically pleasing for men based on the aforementioned oppressive standards as if this is somehow every woman’s ~*sole purpose*~ in life, and if women weren’t objectified, sexualized or desexualized accordingly AND b) if we didn’t live in a society where racism/white supremacy is still very real and pervasive. Unfortunately though, whether you can admit it or not, we do not live in a post-racial, post-feminist world where everything is all sunshine and lollipops across the board. Even if these sorts of things strike you as “minuscule hints,” they’re part of the problem. They’re worth evaluating and stopping.

tl;dr

I have no idea what movie this is from. But this right here, says a whole lot

This is fucked up to White women too, calling them a ‘habit.’

I mean really? Would they have used a WHITE male model to sell this? How would this be perceived differently if it were a Black male model? Did they want someone specifically racially ambiguous?

Who are they trying to sell this to? I would have liked to sit in on that board meeting.

I feel like I should make t-shirts with a mediocre white dude on it that says “White guys: hard habit to break” get some Asian female models and flip it.

& the afterparty

The places I love you

can make me a home

In distance sparring

like

we can improve each other

without hurting ourselves

‘him’ is not the same person as ‘you’

him,

I’ve learned to unload.

push my earrings from his lobes

to exchange jewelry for rent

him, he drives me home

you

split the cab with me

you

who knows right speech

is sometimes silence to make room for your sister

(a grown woman

can sleep in her own bed tonight)

you

who knows the same him as your life before

I’m not trying to make you remember me

I just don’t want him to forget
